Museums of Western Colorado’s 5th Annual Heritage Awards

Colorado Mesa University Ballroom

March 7, 2017 • 6-8 PM

Entertainment — Legendary Ladies

Co-hosted by the Museums of Western Colorado and

the Future Business Leaders of America — Phi Beta Lambda

The Museums of Western Colorado’s (MWC) mission is to help the community preserve its heritage and tell its story. This is a significant undertaking. For this reason, the MWC relies on others in the community, either in cooperation with the Museum or individually, to help fulfill this very important mission. It is an honor and privilege for the MWC to be able to recognize leaders and organizations who have contributed so significantly to the community’s heritage.

At the Heritage Awards, we will be entertained by the Chautauqua performances of the Legendary Ladies, a non-profit educational women’s performance organization. They will portray four women who overcame personal hardships and became part of the lore of the West: Maud Nelson, Lady Moon, Captain Jack and Rosamond Underwood. Learn which pioneering lady mined silver and tourists; who marched to the song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame;” who traveled to the “wilds of Colorado” to teach school; and who earned the nickname of “Cussin’ Kate.” Come enjoy a fun evening and meet these unconventional spirits who are part of the lore of the West.

We received nominations from members of the community, a special Museum committee made the selections and we are now pleased to honor people and organizations in seven areas:

Historian Award — This award recognizes distinguished and long-term contributions by an individual, group or organization to the public understanding and appreciation of Mesa County and Western Slope history.
