Thanks to Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado for sharing!Appleton School, First and Second Grade classes, circa 1921.

Today was the first day of Mesa County School District 51’s 2019-2020 school year. District 51 was the result of over a year of negotiations and a public vote in 1951 that consolidated sixteen Mesa County school districts into a single district.

One of those sixteen school districts was District 39, which served the unincorporated farming area known as Appleton. The Appleton School District was formed in 1911 by consolidating three earlier school districts – Loback, Columbine, and a portion of Pomona – into a single district that would have enough students to start a state-accredited high school.

This photo from the Tufly family photo album captures the first and second grade classes at the Appleton School around the year 1921, when Hollis Tufly would have been in the second grade. No one was identified in the photograph, but we believe Hollis to be the fourth boy from the left seated in the front row.

Copeco was a large pear and apple orchard owned by Earl Craven and partners. There was a club house for employees, and the spacious fruit packing building had a hardwood floor which also served for dances. Beginning in the 1930s a commercial dance hall, called Copeco, occupied the building. Dancing was popular, with a dozen ballrooms in the valley.
