Fall Lecture Series: The Myth of Thanksgiving

November 19, 2024 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm

Join us on November 19th at 5:30 PM at the Whitman Building on the Museum of the West Campus for an insightful presentation by Dr. Erika Jackson, Department Head and Professor of History at Colorado Mesa University. Dr. Jackson will unravel the enduring myths surrounding one of America’s most celebrated holidays in her talk, “The Myth of Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving, often remembered for the harmonious feast between Native Americans and European settlers, is steeped in myths that obscure the true historical context of the event. Dr. Jackson will explore how Thanksgiving was first instituted as a national holiday by George Washington in 1789 and how it evolved over time, including Abraham Lincoln’s shift to the last Thursday in November. She will discuss how modern Thanksgiving traditions—particularly the foods we associate with the holiday—bear little resemblance to what might have been consumed in 1621, and whether the “feast” itself deserves more than a historical footnote.

The most enduring myth, however, is the idea that Thanksgiving was a peaceful concession of Native peoples to European colonialism. Dr. Jackson’s talk will challenge this narrative, inviting us to rethink the legacy and significance of Thanksgiving.

This event is free for CMU students and Museums of Western Colorado members. Community members are welcome for a $5 General Admission ticket, which can be purchased at the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Thanksgiving and its complex history.
