Trail Stewardship Day
April 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Celebrate Earth Day early with us as we clean and maintain our historic dinosaur hiking trail at Riggs Hill!
If you are interested in participating, please RSVP at the bottom of this event page!
On Saturday, April 20th, we are kicking off National Volunteer Week early with a Trail Stewardship Day! With Earth Day in mind, we want to raise awareness about the importance of responsible recreation as well as fossil stewardship. The Grand Valley is home to beautiful, sensitive ecosystems and important paleontological resources. For the education and enjoyment of all, it is our duty to protect these spaces for future generations.
At Trail Stewardship Day, we will give a brief orientation of the Museums of Western Colorado, hike the Riggs Hill Interpretive Trail, clean and maintain the trail, and discuss our Site Stewardship Program. If you enjoy the outdoors and are interested in volunteering outside of business hours, this program may be for you! Site Stewards play an important role in the health and safety of our hiking trails. They notify our Curator of Paleontology of possible vandalism and maintenance needs and help keep fossil resources safe! Printed volunteer interest applications will be available to fill out. You may also fill out a digital interest application here!
What Should I Bring?
Please bring a water bottle, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and appropriate clothes for hiking during springtime! We will provide gloves, trash bags, and light refreshments.
Directions:
To get to the Riggs Hill Trailhead, you can Google “Riggs Hill Parking” for accurate directions. Googling “Riggs Hill” will incorrectly lead you to a residential neighborhood.
